About Mitchell Historic Properties

About the Mitchell Family Properties

Mitchell Historic Properties manages and leases the buildings owned by the Cynthia and George P. Mitchell Family. While Galveston boasted a flourishing downtown district until the mid-twentieth century, many of its historic buildings had fallen into disrepair by the 1960s. In the mid-1970s, Cynthia and George Mitchell began leading efforts to revive downtown Galveston and preserve its rich history by restoring these treasured Victorian buildings.

The Mitchells began with a handful of buildings in the downtown area, including renovating the 1879 Leon & H. Blum building and turning it into the third Tremont House Hotel. In continuing their efforts to return downtown Galveston to its former splendor, the Mitchells also revived the city’s annual Mardi Gras celebration, a tradition that had persisted for nearly a century until coming to a halt during World War II.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, the Mitchells played a pivotal role in breathing new life into historic downtown Galveston. In 1984, there were just 12 businesses located in the Strand Historic District. That number has now grown to over 200, thanks in large part to the Mitchells’ unwavering vision.

Today, Mitchell Historic Properties has been awarded numerous awards and accolades in honor of their preservation and restoration efforts, earning recognition from organizations such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Galveston Historical Foundation and the Texas Historical Commission. With a wide variety of properties, including office and retail space for lease in historic downtown, Mitchell Historic Properties is a pillar of the Galveston community.
